It’s only 17 miles up the hill, but spring comes late at 5,200+ feet…

We met new friends at the top of the ridge:

Owen the Lab, taking a sun break with his ski buddies.

And a talkative Gray Jay …

It felt like we were on top of the world & could see forever …

It made Swirl smile …

… and Cooper wag his tail–can you tell?

For these pound pups, it was a great day to be alive!

One day Swirl plays in the last remnants of winter’s snow, then horray–the sun shines and the daffs are out! It is finally Spring!

There are mossy hide-y holes to check… green green grass to roll in…

and some cool little friends who have been gone for the long winter months have returned…

Hello, Kermit!

Welcome back!

Then, the next day–can you believe it–this:

Which was very confusing, especially to the hummingbirds!

We don’t mind, let’s play inside with the green squeaky ball.

You fickle Spring!

We’re lucky to live in a magical wood, filled with nooks and crannies where the forrest faeries live… Swirl gently explores (as is her nature), while brave Cooper boldly climbs over fallen trees and spongy spring moss…

Of course, it’s fun to play King of the Mountain!

Or hide under the giant fern that grows by the spring crocus…

Which brings us, Cooper, to a favorite spring poem:

“My idlest dreams go farthest, South to a land of fragrant springs

And rivers green beneath our boat-borne flutes and strings,

Back to a town of floating catkins mixed with golden dust

And crowds that fought to see the flowers.”

~  Li Lu  (937 – 978)

It certainly has seemed like the longest winter on record… so we welcome the first day of Spring with a celebratory chat between Cooper and his favorite little Jack Russell Terrier in all of the the Lone Star State, Bella.

She’s got a big family to look after: Randi (one of the best darn equine photographers we know!), her husband Greg, daughter Abbi and their 4-legged family: Alex, Miss Texas, Uncle Fluffy, Swirl (yes, there’s another Swirl! meow) Baby and Smokey. With so many to look after, Bella doesn’t have a moment to dally, “Hey Coop — y’all ready to chat?”

Cooper: Bella, you were sure a little cutie pa-tu-tie! Should we all call you Bella, or do you have a nickname you prefer?

Bella: Now don’t tell, Coop, but at first I thought Miss Naughtiness was my name… I look innocent, so I can get away with murder! But now that I don’t bite ankles quite so often (have you tried them, Coop, quite tasty!), I prefer to be called Bella.

Cooper: I, too, am trying to resist the urge to nibble on shapely ankles, Bella… So, what do you chew on instead?

Bella: Uncle Fluffy. That sweet cat is my fav chew toy. Nothing compares! Tho once in a while, Miss Texas will tell me to take it easy on the cats…

Cooper: Miss Texas? Who’s that?

Bella: Miss Texas is our watch dog supreme, but she has a warm and fuzzy side, especially when she calls me LLC: little, loud & clueless… isn’t that sweet?

Cooper: Hmmmm…. Miss Texas could be right!

Bella: What? … I have another favorite toy, Coop–my green rope! Do you play tug-o-war? Come and  play–I’ll share! Alex is always too busy to play…

Cooper: Now, who’s Alex? Such a big cast of characters!

Bella: At 11-years-old, Alex is our elder statesman. He speaks with an Australian accent, and definitely is the ‘smart one.’ Alex trained me to jump up into the back of the truck. Isn’t that cool?

Cooper: That patch over his eye is quite dashing, don’t you think?

Bella: Sure is, Super Coop! Got to run–spring & Uncle Fluffy are calling me!

Coop: Nice talkin,’ my pint-sized Texas friend with the 10-gallon personality!

With word that a late winter snow was forecast, we went to our local co-op feed store to stock up on critter supplies, and much to our delight the manager Jeffrey had his #1 helper at work–his fabulous Golden Retriever, Scooter. That dog takes his job seriously, meeting & greeting with boundless goodwill and a dazzling smile.

Scooter didn’t even object when we asked if he’d pose on a bale of hay (we’ll take a ton, Mr. Salesman Scoot, you’ve sold us!)… even tho that domain in usually reserved for the barn cat.

Scooter joined Jeff over 4 years ago, when he was just a wee pup, and co-op customers have watched as the lanky Golden Boy has grown up and up and up (“He’s a tall glass of water!” Cooper says). When Jeff’s at his computer, Scooter takes a well-deserved break in the their office.

Our friend Scooter epitomizes all that is good & great about Golden Retrievers… their loyalty to family, the enthusiasm they shower on their friends (BTW which is everyone!), and their kind & generous natures. Swirl wasn’t with us at the co-op, but if she had been, we could imagine a conversation between our pert Miss and that dashing Scooter, much like the one between Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant in the classic movie, Charade:

Swirl: “Do you know what’s wrong with you, Scooter?”

Scooter, suavely: “No, what?!”

Swirl, demurely: “Absolutely nothing.”

Perhaps it’s a case of a boy & his toys … Perhaps in a deprived puppyhood, there was never a snow shovel … whatever the reason, Cooper loves our snow shovel … The first snow of the New Year has arrived, and he is ecstatic as he greets his old friend!

And while we make good use of the shovel, Swirl is busy collecting snow balls as only her full, feathery coat can …

And our fine friends look on as the landscape is magically transformed …

Peace
